Budgeting for Money-Management for Dating and Couples in Relationships
from:Although the man often pays on the first date, that doesn’t mean all of the rest of the funding for the couple needs to be on the man’s shoulders. And although women from generation’s past weren’t expected to understand the ‘difficult’ world of finance and know about household budgets, times have changed and everyone needs to know about budgets and money handling.
So here are the basics to discuss ahead of time to make sure your mate and you on are a financially sound path to success instead of floundering.
Budget
A rule of financial thumb is to save at least 10 percent of your earnings, spend no more than an average one week’s pay on your mortgage or rent, and use the rest to life with: pay utilities and other debts and bills, give back by donating to charities or a church, etc. Of course setting a budget is entirely personal and up to each family and individual. And you can get help form library books, accountants, free articles online, and plenty of other places. Ask your local librarian for helpful resources or search online.
Next grab a notebook of lined paper, or a 3-ring binder with lined paper. List all of your expenses in a column: rent or mortgage, each utility, your cell phone, cable, Internet access, car installment load, credit cards, etc.
Write out the average payment required for each expense. Some utilities offer budget plans at no charge, so you may want to choose this to get a feel for what you owe each month.
Then tally everything up to see the minimum you need to run your life. If you make enough each week to pay for everything plus have some left over, super job. If not, there will be problem as you borrow and borrow and move money around to cover debts. So cut expenses and find out how to effectively spend more wisely, seeking help as needed from your local banker, minister or other resource.
Give and Take
Reuse, repair or go without when possible, too. It s not necessary to get all new things; clothes, cars, house, etc. all the time. Search eBay for auctions with discounts and used items. Shop wholesale stores.
Don’t get greedy, either, just because there are now two of you. Give and take, sharing equally and using wisely. No one person should have more control than the other unless it was agreed upon ahead of time. And if so, you need to honor your commitments.
